1) EDITING

So, you’ve finished your story!

Is the content finalised? Have you shared your manuscript with others (for example, family, friends, alpha/beta readers or critique partners)? Have you made revisions and self-edited to the best of your ability?

Then congratulations! Your manuscript sounds like it's ready for me.

Handing over your manuscript to a stranger can feel daunting. I completely understand. It’s a big step!

What can you expect?

My role is to improve the quality, clarity and efficiency of your writing. I focus on line editing (stylistic refinement, readability, tone, flow and pacing) and copyediting (mechanical correctness, consistency and technical accuracy).

As the landscape for human editors continues to shift, I remain creatively flexible. Although I don’t offer a separate developmental edit report, I integrate and impliment big-picture insight directly into the manuscript, if appropriate to do so. Through targeted editing and inline comments, I identify and address issues as they arise.

This recognised, streamlined approach is effective, well received by clients and offers great value. (See Please Note below).

In summary, my editing:

• picks up errors and inconsistencies in spelling, grammar, punctuation, tenses and syntax
• revises sentences to improve flow and readability
• replaces weak or redundant words, phrases or sentences with more powerful or appropriate alternatives
• adjusts sentences to strengthen impact, clarity, pacing and tension, resolving issues such as repetition, telling versus showing, passive voice, dialogue tags, action beats and subtext

• improves the structure and narrative by indicating where deletions, expansions or rewording may be needed (including info-dumping)

• respects and enhances the author’s voice while improving efficiency and accuracy.

I work in Microsoft Word using Track Changes to make all edits and suggestions, supported by inline comments that explain my reasoning. Track Changes makes all developmental, line, and copyediting visible, which is particularly important for any implemented big-picture changes such as rewritten sentences, moved paragraphs, or trimmed repetition. This allows you to see my decision-making and in action and gives you full control to review, accept, modify, or reject every change.

You remain fully in control. All final decisions are yours, and the goal is to ensure your writing is as strong as possible before the final proofread.

Alongside the edited manuscript, I provide an end report summarising key points and offering guidance to support your continued development. I stay in touch throughout the process to clarify questions, and you’re welcome to email me at any time.

Please Note: If I feel that your manuscript is not yet ready for my streamlined approach - for instance, if it is still at an early, draft stage, structurally unsound, not suffuciently polished or requires further extensive rewriting, I will let you know before we proceed. As I do not offer developmental editing as a standalone service, you may wish to work with another editor on this aspect first.

Full transparency: My editing reflects a hands-on approach. For many writers (particularly those earlier in their careers) this can be a valuable learning experience and an opportunity to hone craft skills. I demonstrate the 'how' through concrete examples of drafting and modelling within the manuscript.

That said, you may prefer that I simply identify developmental issues and leave the implementation of any changes entirely to you. If you would rather a lighter, suggestions-only edit, where I flag concerns instead of including potentially substantial reworking or rewriting, please let me know before I begin.

2) FORMATTING

Brilliant!  It sounds like you’re ready for formatting - the visual preparation stage before publication.

I offer this service for self-publishing authors. I’ll interpret and organise your interior layout to produce a print-ready paperback (PDF) and/or a distribution-ready ebook file.

Formatting deals with the structure, style, layout, spacing and alignment of your story, to produce a smooth, visually appealing reading experience. I will format your manuscript, even if it has been edited and proofread by someone else.

3) COVER DESIGNING

The cover of your book is an important marketing tool. It is the first thing that your potential readers see. 

I don't have to be your editor to design your cover, but it certainly provides me with unique, creative insight into the possibilities.

My approach is traditional, in that I start with a series of hand-drawn sketches. This starts the creative process, leading to an image that fits the style, genre, and audience of your story. I do not use extraction-based generative AI (such as ChatGPT).

My single price includes the artwork for both an ebook cover AND print book sleeve.
