I'm an author and freelance editor who just happens to have artistic skills and training, too!

I start my cover artwork from original hand-drawn composition sketches, developed from scratch and then digitally draw and illustrate using a stylus and tablet.

I use a combination of hand-drawn digital illustration and, where appropriate, photographic references as visual guides to inform compositional details and ensure accuracy for elements such as anatomy, lighting, perspective, textures, architecture, clothing, and natural forms. Textures, shading, colours, and details are created manually using standard digital illustration tools. I create and share a design concept board of these initial creative stages which then inform and become integrated into the finished artwork.

I do not use generative AI/ChatGPT to create my covers.

About AI generated artwork:

There is an important distinction between AI-generated artwork and human-created artwork enhanced using modern design tools.

Platforms such as Amazon KDP require disclosure when generative AI is used to create artwork. However, using recognised, standard features such as Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill, upscaling, noise reduction, or similar tools to edit or enhance artwork created by a human is not the same as instructing AI to generate the artwork.

AI detection tools can also produce substantially different results. Even entirely hand-created artwork may receive a low AI-detection score due to modern digital editing processes. A low AI-detection score should not, by itself, be treated as evidence that an artwork was generated using AI. Therefore, it is reasonable to see a score of 10% or below, even with human-created artwork.

For transparency, I can provide AI-detection results for completed artwork.
